about

Rumpelstiltskin, that fairy tale character who spun straw into gold, visited me as I wrestled with the sadness of surrendering one’s dreams for a more practical life. I reversed the material metaphor and cried about it at the piano.

lyrics

There’s a light on out in the barn.
Sad old man spins your gold into yarn.
That’s what happens when you turn your back on your dreams.
First you tell yourself, you’re just trying to do the right thing.
Twenty years go by in the blink of an eye.
It’s frightening when it hits you.
You’re old a helluva lot longer than you’re young.
And it’s harder to come by the doing
Than talking about the things that you’ve done.
Still the voices inside get louder with the setting sun.

There’s a light on out in the barn.
The tattoo is fading on your arm.
And the aching swells up in your throat
As you feel what it means.
If you could do it all over again, you wouldn’t be sitting here,
Asking yourself would you do it all over again.
And you’re holding back the memories with the tears,
Building up inside like a rising tide,
Ever since the sad old man appeared.
And you know you’re just gonna keep feeling this way for years
left to come.

There’s a light on out in the barn.
It's burning the last of your spark.
Pretty soon the old man will be lost in the dark.
Wise enough to leave it behind, but foolish enough to care.
But you’re still ready to weep
For the little that’s left of your share.
Spinning all that gold into yarn.
Spinning all that gold into yarn.
Spinning all that gold into yarn.
